The outdoor compressor unit and the indoor air handler, often known as the evaporator, are the two components of a heat pump. They’re connected by a conduit that contains the tubing and the power lines, as well as communications and condensate drain lines.
Cooling: The compressor does what its name implies and compresses the refrigerant, which is transported to the condenser, where it loses heat. That heat is transferred into the surrounding air outside. The refrigerant, which is now a liquid, is sent through the tube to the evaporator. It absorbs heat from the indoor air that is blown over the evaporator coils. The cooled air is then distributed throughout your house.
Heating: In the winter, the closed-loop heat pump system is reversed. Instead of extracting heat from within the house, the heat is drawn from the air outside.
When the refrigerant pressure reduces and it becomes a vapor, it cools to a temperature considerably less than that of the air outside. Because heat energy flows from hot to cold, the refrigerant absorbs heat from its surroundings. The compressor on the outside pressurizes the gas into a hot liquid once it has absorbed all the heat available. The extremely hot refrigerant is delivered to your indoor coils, where your blower is used to release the heat into your home.
