What Is A Ductless Heat Pump / Mini-Split Air Conditioner?

Ductless heat pumps offer both heating and cooling capabilities to provide year-round comfort. They allow you to adjust the climate of individual rooms or zones independently of one another.

You’ve probably used a mini-split system while staying in a hotel. They’re incredibly common in the hospitality industry because they let each guest adjust the climate of their room to match their personal preferences. Plus, ductless systems are one of the most energy-efficient ways to manage the temperatures inside your home or business.

Because of their multi-purpose functionality, ductless heat pumps go by a variety of names:

Although there may be slight technical differences between some of these terms, they’re often used interchangeably.

Multi-zone Systems

How Does A Ductless Heat Pump Work?

Ductless heat pumps rely on refrigerant lines to transfer heat from one location to another. This differs from traditional HVAC systems which create heat by burning fuel or heating electric coils.

In the colder seasons, a ductless heat pump pulls heat from the cool air outside and releases it indoors. During warmer months, the mini-split systems work much like traditional air conditioners. They absorb heat from inside your home via the refrigerant lines and then release it outdoors.

Like central air conditioning systems, mini-splits feature both indoor and outdoor units. However, central ACs typically only make use of a single indoor unit, often placed in the attic or basement. That one unit forces air into the duct system to uniformly cool the entire home. As the cool air passes through the ducts, it can lose 30% of its energy or more, leading to higher utility bills.

Mini-split systems often include 2 or more indoor units. These are mounted to the wall or ceiling of some, potentially every, room (or “zone”) in the house. By transferring heat through refrigerant tubing instead of ductwork, mini-split systems don’t suffer the same kind of energy loss as duct-based systems.

Single-zone systems can be used for small spaces or those with open-concept designs. Multi-zone systems are a better choice for larger homes as well as those with more segmented layouts.

Improving Air Quality with Mitsubishi Ductless Heat Pumps

Mitsubishi ductless heat pumps offer the added benefit of cleaning the air quality in your home as they keep you comfortable. Each indoor unit features a Dual Barrier Coating that prevents contaminants like dust, dirt, oil, and grease from building up. This makes Mitsubishi ductless heat pumps the perfect heating and cooling solution for individuals with asthma and other respiratory conditions.

For an added layer of protection, Mitsubishi ductless systems can also be equipped with germicidal UV light attachment. The inside of an air conditioner provides an ideal environment for mold, bacteria, and other microorganisms to grow. This bio-growth can produce offensive odors in addition to adverse health effects.

The optional UV system solves these problems by bathing the inside of the AC unit with high-intensity ultraviolet light. Doing so kills these unwanted guests, eliminating any odors they may have omitted. Additionally, the UV system aids the filters in removing airborne contaminants. And by keeping the unit clean, the attachment also reduces maintenance needs.
